Plastic is everywhere! It’s used to make our toys, food containers, and even our cars. You may look at plastic in your home, at school and even outside. But did you know that plastic can actually do much more for us than get us through everyday things? There are things that are interesting to know about plastic, such as its many different uses in our lives.
Polymers are special materials from which plastic is made. A polymer is a very long molecule made up of many small repeating units called monomers. Different polymers have different properties which allow them to be used differently. There are several types of plastic, one you might be familiar with is Polyethylene (PE), which is one of the most common and is used to make the plastic bags we use at the grocery store. Another kind, known as Polypropylene (PP), is sturdy and is used to create food containers, such as the ones that house yogurt or takeout dishes. Different polymers have unique properties, which makes them ideal for specific products.
Plastic is highly malleable and has a wide range of applications. This has transformed the way its designers conceive products. Each day inventors are making new, improved plastic products with new ideas and technology. For example, a company, Environmental Masterbatch, has created a kind of biodegradable plastic. That way, when we dispose of it, it won’t linger in the environment for decades like regular plastics. Instead, it can break down and become soil again with no harm to our planet!
Used wisely, plastic is both a pandemic saving grace and a world-wrecking pollution crisis. On the one hand, plastic manufacturing creates a lot of jobs for men, and it makes a lot of money. That means many families rely on the plastic industry for their livelihood. But there is a downside too. The way plastic is made hurts the environment as a lot of plastic doesn't decompose for a long time. It can cause pollution, which is dangerous to animals, plants and even humans. We need to think about our usage of plastic and develop strategies to limit the adverse implications of plastic.
Plastic is in many daily-use items, but you may not pay much attention to that. Plastic is really helpful from toothbrushes and soap dispensers to car parts. It’s in our backpacks, the bottles we drink out of, some of our clothes. Plastic makes our lives easier because it is light weight and durable. Imagine all of the things you use in one day and likely a lot of those things are made from plastic!
As concern for the environment grows, businesses are striving to develop new and improved uses of plastic. They’re not only concentrating on producing new products but on ways to recycle and upcycle old plastic. Environmental Masterbatch is also interesting to recycle old plastic and convert them into new products. We literally add another life to plastic then, and that is so much better for our planet than just throwing it away!
